Leadership is the ability to influence people, according to my understanding. A great leader would be the one who gets people to follow him; is able to make things happen; and is always open to learning something new everyday.
I’m sure we are all very much aware of the need for good leadership qualities, no? If not, that is a topic for another post. Right now we are going to focus on growing and nurturing those qualities to make you even a better leader.
I was lucky enough to attend leadership training at ACTIVATE! Leadership, from the beginning of the year 2016. At ACTIVATE! we are taught that everyone is a leader. But, we have different leadership spirits and archetypes. We even did a LEMON Leadership assessment that helps you describe what kind of a leader you are.
“A leader is one who has the power to influence action and fears no responsibility.”So, if you’re not able to attend leadership training like I did, and you’re captain of the sports team, your CEO at work, you’re a community leader or any other kind of leader you can think of, how do you become the best kind of leader, a leader that everyone respects and loves? Stick around to find out.
1. Good self-esteem is key, in every road to change. As a leader, it is important to have a great self-esteem so that you don’t get over-shadowed by the people you are leading. This is also important since you will be the voice of authority and an example to others; you have to believe that you are a leader. Sometimes you have to do thing others would never do, so having a good set of values and self-belief is of great importance.
2. Be firm, but kind. I will take Nelson Mandela for an example. He was a man with a very soft heart, he loved children so much but, he was a leader of all men. He was a voice that can never be ignored.
3. Find out the kind of leader you are. I have mentioned LEMON Leadership; it is a great tool to help you understand your strengths and weaknesses. Knowing your weaknesses helps you improve where it is needed and understand the ‘shadows’ that you can’t change.
4. Good relationship with others. Compassion is a point I want to squeeze in over here. I believe that, if you are to lead people, you need to understand that they are human, with real life problems. If you are compassionate and you understand their problems as if they were your own, people tend to love and respect you for it. This also builds a healthy relationship between you and your followers, making it easy for you to be a voice of influence.
5. Leaders are both teachers and learners. If you are a leader, be willing to learn from others. Learning is the most important part of it. As a person, you can’t possibly know everything, if a person willing to give you a chance to learn something new, take it, regardless of who that person is. Being a leader means showing the way, so share your knowledge with the ones who follow you.
6. Do things out of your comfort zone. We were once showed a video of a shirtless dancing guy who is dancing like crazy, all alone. Soon, he has like a thousand followers and his dancing doesn’t look crazy at all anymore.
7. Leading is about what you do, not what you know. Remember this: you lead by example and you’re both a teacher and a learner. Leadership is about taking action and not just talking about the things you know! Be careful when taking that kind of action, there is always someone watching. So, if you’re doing something great, the person watching is more likely to follow, and that way, you’re automatically a leader.
I hope this gives you a new insight on what being a true leader means for you.
God luck future leaders.
